As the Founder of Nelly's African Kitchen, I am passionate about sharing the rich and diverse culinary heritage of Africa with a Western audience. Africa, with its vast and varied landscapes, is home to over 1 billion people and 54 unique countries, each with its own distinct tribes, recipes, and cooking techniques. I've dedicated myself to studying these diverse approaches to food and have worked diligently to adapt them for easy preparation using accessible ingredients. My goal is to make the vibrant flavors and traditions of African cuisine not only authentic but also approachable for everyone...whether you've previously tried African food or not!
The significance & story of the calabash
The calabash, a gourd used for storing milk, is an incredibly important symbol of the Kalenjin tribe of Kenya. Gorgeous handiwork joined with day-to-day practicality, the Calabash is just one of thousands of examples of the deep African harmony between food and identity.
